Itinerary: Fayoum is a city of incomparable beauty and history. Located 130 km southwest of Cairo it occupies part of the ancient site of Crocodilopolis, center for the cult of Sobek, the crocodile-god. The center of the city is on the canal called Bahr Yussef, with the four waterwheels, that are adopted by the governorate of Fayoum as its national Symbol.
Fayoum is the source of some famous death masks or mummy portraits painted during the Roman occupation of the area. The Egyptians continued their practice of burying their dead, despite the Roman preference for cremation.
Your journey will include a visit to Kom Oshim museum, Karanis Museum,Maydoum Pyramid and the famous, historic, waterwheels that were used to irrigate the agriculture land during the primitive times.
Your Egyptologist/Guide will describe the first stone building in history, which was the Maydoum Pyramid along with giving you insights to this incredible city. Al Fayoum was also the hunting center for the royal families of Egypt at the beginning of the last century. Some of the earliest fossils that date back to 35 million years ago were found here as well.
