One of the best displays of antiquities in Egypt is located at the Luxor Museum. Opened in 1975, the collection is limited in number of items, but they are beautifully displayed.

There are a number of exhibits from Tutankhamon, including a cow-goddess head from his tomb on the first floor and his funerary boats on the second floor. However, some of the real attractions include a statue of Tuthmosis III (circa 1436 BC) on the first floor, and 283 sandstone blocks arranged

It is a small museum overlooking the Corniche of Luxor devoted to the art of mummification. It displays the techniques of burials and the tools used for the mummification process such as the hooks, scrapers, sculpts which resembles the modern tools used in surgery. The museum shows the evolution of mummification through different periods of time, from simple burial techniques in sand baskets which exposed the body to desiccation to more sophisticated techniques where the internal organs were removed and stored in jars and the body is dehydrated in salts for 40-70 days, then the body is being wrapped in bandages and placed in sarcophagi. Mummified animals such as crocodiles, fish, monkeys, cats amongst others are displayed in the museum.
TRANSPORTATION
The city of Luxor is served by an international airport, Luxor International Airport. Recently a bridge was designed a few miles upstream of the main city of Luxor, allowing ready land access from the East Bank to the West Bank.
Usually the river crossings have been the domain of many ferry services. The so called 'local ferry', continues to operate from a landing opposite the Temple of Luxor. The single fare (March 2007) is 1 L.E. per passenger. However this ferry is mainly used by the locals although a number of braver foreigners do use it. Alternatively feluccas line the East Bank of the Nile all day providing a cheap and leisurely sail to the other side. For a luxuries journey between Luxor and Aswan a stream of Elegant Nile Cruises run an itinerary between the two cities with several stops to view the monuments lying on the banks of the river.
Also for domestic travel along the route of the Nile, a rail service operates twice a day. A morning train and sleeping train can be taken from the station located around one mile from Luxor Temple. The line runs between several major destinations, including Aswan to the South and Cairo to the north.
Calèches, or horse-drawn carriages, are common on the east bank and are a delightful way to see the city, especially at night-time. Prices vary according to bargaining skill.
