Once you have decided what to see in Cairo, the next question is how. Should you book a private tour in Cairo, with your own guide and car, or join a group? In practice, both can be excellent, and both can be disappointing if they do not match your travel style. So here is an honest comparison to help you choose.

Best for group: solo travellers on a budget who enjoy meeting people

Always check: licensed guide, what is included, shopping stops, group size

When a private tour in Cairo makes most sense

Families with children, who need breaks, snacks and flexibility.

Older travellers or anyone with limited mobility, who benefit from a car close by and a gentle pace.

Special interests – photographers, history enthusiasts or travellers who want to go deeper into, say, Old Kingdom tombs or Mamluk architecture.

Short stays and layovers, where every hour counts and you cannot wait for other people.

Couples and honeymooners who want the experience to feel special.

In a city where traffic, ticketing and crowds can be tiring, a private tour in Cairo often turns a stressful day into an easy one.

Solo travellers on a tight budget, for whom sharing transport costs matters most.

Sociable travellers who enjoy meeting people from around the world.

Longer trips with set itineraries, such as desert camping safaris, where a small group adds to the fun around the campfire.

Questions to ask before you book any tour

Is the guide a licensed Egyptologist? In Egypt, tour guides are licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and usually hold a degree in Egyptology or tourism guidance.

What exactly is included? Entrance tickets, lunch, bottled water, tips and extra tickets (for example inside the Great Pyramid) vary between operators.

Are there shopping stops? Some budget tours include visits to papyrus, perfume or alabaster shops. If you do not want them, ask for a tour without.

How big is the group? “Small group” can mean 8 people or 30.

What is the cancellation policy?

Is the company licensed and reviewed? Look for a licensed Egyptian tour operator with genuine independent reviews.

Our approach

For this reason, at Deluxe Travel Egypt most of our day tours in Cairo are private: your own licensed Egyptologist guide, a private air-conditioned vehicle with driver and hotel pick-up. We can adjust the timing and the route to your interests. For some longer adventures, such as the White Desert, we also offer shared departures. In short, if you are unsure which suits you, tell us about your group and we will advise honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Are private tours in Cairo expensive?

They cost more than group tours in total, but for families and small groups the price per person is often close to a group tour, with far more flexibility.

Can I customise a private tour?

Yes. With a private tour you can change the start time, add or skip sites and set the pace, within opening hours and travel times.

Do I need a guide in Cairo?

It is not compulsory, but a licensed guide makes sites far more meaningful and handles tickets, transport and vendors.

Can I hire just a car and driver?

Yes. You can hire a private car with driver and guide by the hour. See our Car with Driver & Guide page for prices.

The opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum has created one of the best sightseeing days in the world. The pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum stand only a few minutes apart, so in a single day you can stand at the foot of the Great Pyramid and then see the treasures of Tutankhamun and the boat buried for Khufu. Here is how to plan the combination so it feels rich rather than rushed.

Time needed: a full day: 3–4 hours at each site plus lunch

Best order: pyramids in the morning, GEM in the afternoon

Summer tip: outdoor sites early; the air-conditioned museum in the heat of the day

Tickets: GEM tickets in advance from tickets.gem.eg; plateau tickets at the entrance

Why the two belong together

The GEM was built on the edge of the Giza plateau deliberately. Its Grand Staircase ends at a giant window looking straight at the pyramids, and many of its objects come from the cemeteries around them. Visiting both on the same day lets you connect the monuments with the people and objects behind them: you see Khufu’s pyramid in the morning and the cedar boat buried beside it in the afternoon, the tombs of officials on the plateau and their statues in the galleries.

Which first: pyramids or museum?

For most of the year, start with the pyramids. Early mornings on the plateau are cooler, quieter and better for photographs. Move to the museum around midday, when the sun is strongest, and enjoy the air-conditioned galleries during the hottest hours.

Visit the GEM first only if you arrive late in the morning and want the softer late-afternoon light on the plateau, or if your museum ticket has a fixed early time slot.

Plan your visit

This exact combination is one of our most popular private days.

A sample day at the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum

7:30 – hotel pick-up.

8:00–11:30 – Giza plateau: the Great Pyramid (inside, if you wish), Khafre and Menkaure, the panoramic viewpoint, the Sphinx and the valley temple.

11:30–12:30 – lunch near the plateau or at the museum.

12:30–16:30 – the GEM: the Grand Hall and Ramesses II, the Grand Staircase, the main galleries, the Tutankhamun galleries and Khufu’s boats.

17:00 – return to your hotel, or stay for sunset and dinner near the pyramids.

The Grand Staircase ends at a window framing the pyramids.

Prioritising inside the GEM

The museum is enormous. If you have only three or four hours, focus on:

The Grand Staircase – walk it from bottom to top.

The Tutankhamun galleries – allow at least an hour.

Khufu’s boats – especially meaningful after seeing the Great Pyramid that morning.

One or two main galleries of your choice, such as kingship or beliefs.

Our GEM visitor’s guide has more detail on each section.

Practical tips

Book GEM tickets in advance on the official website, tickets.gem.eg.

Bring a card. Ticket offices at the plateau increasingly prefer card payments.

Pace yourself. You will walk several kilometres. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and take a proper lunch break.

Travelling with children or limited mobility? The museum has lifts and ramps; the plateau is sandy and uneven, but the electric buses reduce walking between the main sights.

Use a private car and guide. Switching between the two sites is quicker, and a guide can tailor the visit to your interests and energy.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in one day?

Yes. They are about 2 km apart, so a full day allows three to four hours at each, with time for lunch.

Should I visit the pyramids or the GEM first?

Usually the pyramids first, in the cool of the morning, and the museum in the afternoon.

Can I see the pyramids from the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Yes. The Grand Staircase ends at a large window with a view of the Giza pyramids.

Is this combination possible on a layover?

Yes, with a long enough layover – usually ten hours or more – and the right visa arrangements. See our Cairo layover tours.

Cairo is a city that deserves several days, but sometimes one is all you have – a stopover, a layover or a short business trip. The secret to seeing Cairo in one day is to be realistic. Traffic is heavy and distances are long, so the best plan concentrates on one area rather than racing across the city. This itinerary does exactly that, and it is the one our guides use most often.

Start time: around 7:30–8:00 for the coolest, quietest hours

Total time: about 9–10 hours including lunch

Evening: Nile dinner cruise or dinner with a view of the pyramids

Alternative: pyramids in the morning, then Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili

Cairo in one day – morning: the pyramids and the Sphinx

7:30 – Pick-up. Leave your hotel early. Depending on where you are staying, the drive to Giza takes 20 to 60 minutes.

8:00–11:30 – The Giza plateau. Enter through the visitor centre and use the electric buses to reach the Great Pyramid of Khufu. If you wish, go inside with an extra ticket. Continue to the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and the panoramic viewpoint, then finish at the Great Sphinx and the granite valley temple of Khafre. A short camel ride can be added here. For more detail, see our guide to planning a first visit to the Giza Pyramids.

Midday: lunch near the pyramids

11:30–12:30 – Lunch. Several restaurants near the plateau and around the Grand Egyptian Museum serve Egyptian dishes, some with views of the pyramids. It is a good moment to try classics such as grilled meats, molokhia or fresh salads and dips. Read more about traditional Egyptian food.

Afternoon: the Grand Egyptian Museum

12:30–16:30 – The GEM. The Grand Egyptian Museum is only a few minutes from the pyramids. Spend about four hours here:

the colossal statue of Ramesses II in the Grand Hall;

the Grand Staircase with its statues of kings and its view of the pyramids;

the Tutankhamun galleries, with the gold mask and the complete treasures of the tomb;

Khufu’s cedarwood boat, if time allows.

Tickets should be booked in advance. Our GEM visitor’s guide covers the highlights.

Plan your visit

Nile Pharaoh Dinner Cruise in Cairo

Evening: the Nile

17:00–19:00 – Rest. Return to your hotel to freshen up.

19:30–22:00 – Dinner on the Nile. End the day with a dinner cruise on the Nile, with music and a tanoura (whirling) dance show, and see the city’s lights from the water. If you prefer something quieter, dinner at a restaurant with a pyramid view is a lovely alternative.

Another way to see Cairo in one day: pyramids and medieval Cairo

If you have already seen Egyptian collections elsewhere, or you are more curious about the living city, swap the museum for the historic centre:

Morning: Giza pyramids and the Sphinx, as above.

Afternoon: drive to the Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, then the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan.

Late afternoon and evening: walk along al-Muizz Street and finish in the bazaar of Khan el-Khalili, with tea at El Fishawy as the lanterns come on.

Expect around an hour in traffic between Giza and the centre.

One day on a layover

Many travellers see Cairo during a long layover at Cairo International Airport. As a rule of thumb you need a layover of at least eight to ten hours to see the pyramids comfortably and return in time for your flight; add the GEM if you have more. Check visa requirements for your nationality in advance, keep your passport and boarding documents with you and leave a generous margin for traffic on the way back. A private driver and guide waiting at arrivals makes the day much smoother.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see Cairo in one day?

You can see its most famous highlights – the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum – in one well-planned day. The rest of the city needs more time.

Should I choose the GEM or Islamic Cairo for my one day?

For first-time visitors, the pyramids plus the GEM is the most rewarding combination and avoids long drives. Choose Islamic Cairo if you prefer living history, markets and architecture.

How long a layover do I need to see the pyramids?

At least eight to ten hours, depending on your visa situation and the time of day. Allow plenty of time to return to the airport.

Is it better to book a private tour for one day in Cairo?

Yes. A private car and guide save time with tickets, transport and route planning, which matters when you only have one day.

It is one of the first questions travellers ask when planning Egypt: how many days in Cairo is enough? The honest answer is that Cairo has more to see than almost any city on earth, from the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum to a thousand years of Islamic and Coptic heritage. Most visitors find that three full days is the sweet spot. Here is what you can realistically do with one to five days.

At a glance

Minimum: 1 day – pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum

Our recommendation: 3 days – adds the Islamic and Coptic quarters, Saqqara and Dahshur

Ideal for enthusiasts: 4–5 days – adds more museums and a day trip

Biggest time factor: traffic: group sights by area

Best months: October to April, when days are cooler

One day in Cairo: the essentials

If you only have a day – for example on a layover – focus on Giza. Visit the pyramids and the Sphinx early in the morning, then spend the afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum, a few minutes away, to see Tutankhamun’s treasures. Both are on the west side of the city, so you avoid crossing Cairo’s traffic. End with dinner overlooking the pyramids or a Nile dinner cruise if you have the evening free. See our detailed one-day plan.

The Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, a highlight of day two or three.

Two days: pyramids plus medieval Cairo

With two days, keep day one for Giza and the GEM and spend day two in the historic centre:

Morning: the Citadel of Salah al-Din and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali.

Midday: the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan and the al-Rifa’i Mosque.

Afternoon and evening: al-Muizz Street and the bazaar of Khan el-Khalili, with tea at El Fishawy.

Alternatively, swap medieval Cairo for Coptic Cairo and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization if early Christian history and the royal mummies interest you more.

Plan your visit

Choose a ready-made Cairo break or let us tailor one to the number of days you have.

All Cairo City Breaks

Three days: the sweet spot

Three full days let you see Cairo’s three great layers – pharaonic, Christian and Islamic – without rushing:

Day 1: pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Day 2: Memphis, Saqqara and Dahshur: the first pyramid of Djoser, the Bent and Red Pyramids and the colossus of Ramesses II. Read why these sites matter.

Day 3: Coptic Cairo in the morning, then Islamic Cairo, the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili.

This is the backbone of most of our Cairo city breaks.

Four to five days: go deeper

With extra time you can add:

The historic Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

A walking tour of Darb al-Ahmar, Bab Zuweila and the Blue Mosque.

A day trip to Alexandria or to the Fayoum and the fossil whales of Wadi El Hitan.

A day trip to Luxor by air to see Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the temple of Hatshepsut.

An evening sound and light show at the pyramids or a Nile dinner cruise.

Tips for planning your time in Cairo

Group sights by area. Giza and the GEM are in the west, Islamic and Coptic Cairo in the centre and south. Crossing the city can take an hour at peak times.

Start early. Mornings are cooler and quieter, especially at the pyramids and in summer.

Mind Fridays. Mosques are busy at midday prayers; plan museum or pyramid visits instead.

Use a private car and guide. It saves time, removes the stress of taxis and tickets and lets you adapt the day as you go.

Plan the rest of Egypt. Most travellers combine Cairo with a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan; three nights in Cairo plus three or four nights on the Nile is a classic first trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day in Cairo enough?

One day is enough to see the pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, but not the rest of the city. If you can, stay at least two or three days.

How many days do I need for the pyramids?

Half a day covers the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx. Add another half day for the GEM, and a full day if you also want Saqqara and Dahshur.

How many days in Cairo before a Nile cruise?

Two to three days is ideal before or after a cruise between Luxor and Aswan.

What is the best time of year to visit Cairo?
