There is no single best time to visit Egypt – it depends on what you want to do. Sightseeing among the temples of Luxor is most comfortable in winter, the Red Sea is warmest in late summer, and 2027 brings two special dates: Ramadan in February–March and the “eclipse of the century” over Luxor on 2 August. This month-by-month guide helps you choose.
At a glance
- Best overall: October to April – warm, sunny days and cool evenings
- Busiest and most expensive: Christmas–New Year and Easter
- Best value: May–June and September (hot in the south, fewer crowds)
- Hottest: June to August, with Luxor and Aswan often around 40 °C
- Red Sea swimming: warmest water from July to October
- 2027 highlights: Abu Simbel sun festival (22 Feb and 22 Oct) and the total eclipse in Luxor (2 Aug)
Quick answer: the best time to visit Egypt
For most travellers, the best time to visit Egypt is from October to April. Days are sunny and warm rather than hot, which makes long visits to the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings far more pleasant. However, the trade-off is crowds and higher prices, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter. If you prefer quieter sites and better value, travel in March–April or October–November.
Egypt weather by month
These are approximate average daytime highs; however, nights are much cooler in the desert, especially in winter.
| Month | Cairo (avg high) | Luxor / Aswan (avg high) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|

| March | 24 °C | 29–31 °C | Warm, spring; occasional dusty khamsin wind |
| April | 28 °C | 34–35 °C | Hot in the south; Easter crowds |
| May | 32 °C | 38–39 °C | Hot; fewer visitors, good deals |
| June | 34 °C | 40–41 °C | Very hot inland; Red Sea pleasant |
| July | 35 °C | 41–42 °C | Hottest month; early starts essential |
| August | 35 °C | 41 °C | Very hot; total solar eclipse in Luxor on 2 Aug 2027 |
| September | 33 °C | 39 °C | Still hot; warmest Red Sea water |

| December | 20 °C | 24–25 °C | Busy around Christmas and New Year |

Season by season
Winter (December–February): peak season
Perfect temperatures for sightseeing in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, and the best time for a Nile cruise. Therefore, book hotels, cruises and tours early, especially for Christmas and New Year. Also, nights can be cold in the desert – bring a warm layer.
Spring (March–May): warm and quieter
Pleasant in Cairo and on the Red Sea, and hot in the south by May. In addition, spring can bring the khamsin, a hot, dusty wind that blows on some days. Easter is busy; May, on the other hand, offers good value.
Summer (June–August): hot, but rewarding
Upper Egypt is very hot, so start tours at dawn and rest at midday. On the plus side, prices are lower, sites are quiet and the Mediterranean coast and Red Sea are at their best. In 2027, summer has a unique highlight: the total solar eclipse over Luxor on 2 August.
Autumn (September–November): the sweet spot
By then the heat eases, the sea is still warm and crowds have not yet peaked. October and November are among the best months of the year to visit Egypt.
Special dates in 2027
- 7 January – Coptic Christmas: a public holiday; churches in Old Cairo hold services.
- 22 February and 22 October – Abu Simbel sun festival: at sunrise, sunlight reaches the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple of Ramesses II and lights up the statues inside.
- Ramadan – expected around 8/9 February to 9/10 March 2027: sites stay open, often with shorter hours. Meanwhile, evenings are lively and festive. Afterwards, Eid al-Fitr follows (expected around 10–11 March). Exact dates depend on the moon sighting.
- Monday 3 May – Sham el-Nessim: Egypt’s spring festival, when families picnic in parks and along the Nile.
- 2 August – total solar eclipse: more than six minutes of totality in Luxor.
